Away
v Purple Turtle |
2-1 |
League |
| After all the hype
of England struggling against Andorra and multi million pound moves
to Manchester City, the important stuff got underway…. The Reading
& District Sunday League! DC Steamers, under the guidance of
new manager Richard Scaldwell, opened against Purple Turtle at Palmer
Park and the day started with a record being broken… Fooksey making
the shortest ever steamers appearance, about 30 seconds, before
being replaced due to injury (he says!!!)
In terms of the game DC started fairly slowly and suffered some
scares early on, including keeper Craig dropping a Purple Turtle
corner on the attackers foot... which was somehow missed?!? Purple
Turtle eventually did take the lead after Danby was adjudged to
have handled the ball in the area, Craig actually saved the resulting
penalty but unfortunately the re-bound was met by the penalty taker
to slammed the ball home. DC continued to make chances and the breakthrough
came shortly before half time when the Purple Turtle keeper failed
to keep out Jenson’s free kick. The second half continued to be
very lively with both sides trading blows until a long DC clearance
up field was met by the head of Jenson. His flicked header was into
the path of Owen who had broken from the midfield. Owen slotted
the ball home to make it 2-1 to DC. DC could have extended the lead
when Jenson rose above the defence to meet Howard’s free kick only
for it to hit the bar. James also had a good effort to extend the
lead but his effort came back off the post. DC survived a late scare
when Craig got down low to his right to keep out a Purple Turtle
strike. Despite losing centre back Howard late on with injury, The
DC defence, marshalled by new captain Neil Sprackling, held on to
claim maximum points in their first game of the season. A number
of DC players put in great performances but the man of the match
champagne was taken by Jenson after one goal, one assist and generally
making a nuisance of himself for 90 minutes!

Away
v Loxwood Park Rangers |
2-6 |
League |
| DCS looked to continue
their good start to the season away at Loxwood Park Rangers on Sunday.
However the game was one to forget from a Steamers point of view.
DC never really got going in the first half and went behind after
Steve Barker was penalised for a push of the edge of the 18 yard
box, Loxwood scored from the resulting free kick. DC hit back almost
immediately after a bit of a scramble in the penalty area, the ball
fell to James who put it into the back of the net. DC soon went
behind again after a long ball forward from Loxwood resulted in
a mix up between Goalkeeper and Defence. It got worse for DC when
it looked like Steve Danby had cleared the ball off the line only
for the Steamers linesman (Rory) to award the goal. A couple of
positional changes at half time seemed to breath life into DC but
went further behind when Keeper Craig tipped a Loxwood free kick
onto the bar only for the rebound to put in the back of the net.
Jensen pulled a goal back for DC straight from the kick off although
DC never looked likely to get back into the game and conceeded two
more goals before the game ended. Chris Campbell and Duncan Glen
made their first appearances of the seson with the latter almost
scoring late on. It was a bad Day at the office and Richard made
his views aware in the changing room afterwards. |

Away
v Meadow Rangers |
0-0 |
League |
The third DCS match
of the season was another away fixture, this time against Meadow
Rangers. DCS added a further point to this seasons tally by playing
out a 0-0 draw. DCS started well and saw a lot of the ball in the
first half but without really creating any clear cut chances. Neither
the Craig in the DCS goal or the Meadow Rangers keeper had a lot
to do in the first half. Meadow Rangers started to see more of the
ball in the second half but still didn’t manage to create any real
opportunities until their striker managed to break the offside trap,
Keeper Craig was quickly off his line to clear the ball but the
ref gave a penalty. It was only once he consulted the DCS linesman
that he changed his mind. DCS did start to create a few more opportunities
and had Chris Taylor been taller than 4ft he may well have reached
a ball that went across the face of the goal. DC only really tested
the Meadow keeper with a late effort from Steve Bell but the match
ended goalless.
Man of the Match for DCS this week was Howard Cooke who put in
a great performance. Despite being injured early on Howard played
on through the majority of the match.
