Five
first half goals were enough to see off Palmer FC this evening in Wargrave.
With Rory deputising for Darren in goal, Jensen gave a run out to a possible
new signing in Richard Scaldwell. DC also saw Danny Feasey appear for the
first time this season as he lined up with Jensen in the attack. Paul Smithson
and JJ were the casualties from the starting eleven from Sunday as they warmed
the subs bench. With the opposition kicking off, DC weathered some early
pressure and created chances of their own but without success. It was Steve
Bell though who eventually opened the scoring when he made an intelligent run
across the back four and connected with a chipped pass from Jensen leaving him
only with the keeper to beat. He soon made it 2-0 when some tidy play sent the
ball across to the right, Chris hit a first time pass into Steve's feet
leaving him to turn his marker and fire the ball into the far corner of the
net. The Steamers were on top at this point and the goals then came at quicker
intervals. Ray rose at the back post to head in a Paul Allen corner before
Nick pounced on a defensive error, rounded the keeper and made it 4-0. Danny
then scored number five when Richard put a perfectly weighted ball though to
him. This game was a delight not only to watch but to play in too.
Constructive comments replaced the constant moaning enhancing team spirit and
confidence, this showed as Palmer were outplayed in the first half. Credit has
to be given to the opposition though, they came out in the second half and
made it difficult for DC not allowing them the time and space they had in the
first half. Andy Holt and Jensen were replaced by Andy Seery and JJ
respectively before Jensen had to return to the fray replacing Chris who had
to come off with a foot injury. Jensen eventually made way for Paul Smithson
for the final 20 minutes. Everyone who took part in tonight's game played
exceptionally well but a special mention is left for Richard Scaldwell who
turned up at the last moment, won everything he went for in midfield and had a
hand in at least a couple of the goals, a great asset if he signs.
The starting line-up was as
follows: Rory O'Neill; Chris Taylor, Ray Townsend, Andy Holt, Steve Danby; Nick Smith, Steve Bell,
Richard Scaldwell, Paul Allen, Jensen Langford, Danny Feasey
