Oct 06th 2002 v Abbey Rangers Res

4-3

League
A manic final 15 minutes ended with DC taking all three points this morning and taking revenge from a 4-1 beating at the start of the season. Steve Danby put the the home side into the lead with a glorious header after Nick Smith had cut the defence open with a cross field ball to Jordy. His pinpoint cross landed straight onto the head of Steve, who'd leapt like a Salmon to guide a powerful header into the top corner of the net. Whilst both teams created chances neither could convert them and both teams wandered in at half time with the score at 1-0 to DC. Early on in the second half, Steve Bell forgot which way he should have been shooting and accidentally mis-directed a clearance that caught Darren unawares. Fortunately, his goal bound effort hit the crossbar and was cleared to safety. Darren was then called into action when he got down quick and saved a well struck effort. It was the 75th minute when the game suddenly burst into life. A frantic last quarter of an hour producing 6 goals. First, Abbey equalised. DC re-grouped and a minute later, went straight down the other end with Jensen finishing a lovely passing move. Minutes later, Abbey equalised for a second time and then took the lead with 8 minutes remaining. DC refused to lie down and accept defeat and Danny equalised when the keeper mis-judged a bounce allowing Danny to head into the empty net. Time was nearly up when Steve Bell scored the winner. He lobbed the keeper whilst under pressure must to the relief of his teammates. This was a game that DC deserved to win although were pushed all the way to achieve it.
The starting line-up was as follows: Darren Holder; Chris Taylor, Ray Townsend, Howard Cooke, Steve Danby, Richard Jordan, Nick Smith, Steve Bell, Paul Allen, Jensen Langford, Danny Feasey
Scorers: Steve Danby, Jensen, Danny, Steve B

Oct 20th 2002 v Bulmershe OB's

4-2

League
DC dug deep this morning to sweep aside a Bulmershe side that took the lead and equalised before succumbing to a strong Steamers side. The home side started well although went behind against the run of play when a dubious penalty was awarded to the Bulmershe side. A high ball was played into the Steamers penalty area, Howard and the opposing striker were jostling for positions and the referee felt that Howard had impeded the striker. The penalty was converted. Despite feeling unjustly penalized, DC kept up the pressure and eventually got there deserved equaliser when Howard broke forward and sent a long range effort looping over the keeper into the top corner from 20 yards out. Danny made it 2-1 soon after when Howard won an important tackle in DC's last third and found Richard Scaldwell in space. Richard, reading Danny's run, laid a perfectly weighted through ball into his path leaving Danny to round the keeper and pass the ball into the empty net. With no changes at half time, DC continued from where they left off but eventually found themselves back on level terms when an expected offside decision was over-ruled by the referee. Despite the acute angle, the striker was able to guide the ball past Darren into the corner of the goal. With this setback, DC refused to let their heads drop and after a ten minute period where they lost their shape, DC regrouped and carved out a chance that resulted in Jordi winning a penalty. Paul Allen, who'd replaced Danny Feasey minutes before, laid a pass inside to Nick whose flick found Jordi in the penalty area. As Jordi was shaping up to shoot, he was cynically hacked down. Nick added to his goal tally for the season by converting the penalty. Jordi did get himself on the scoresheet when a cross field ball was well dummied by Nick allowing the ball to roll through to Jordi. Unmarked and unchallenged, Jordi coolly stroked the ball past the keeper. Duncan and Paul Smithson replaced Jensen and Steve Bell  respectively and created a chance late on.
The starting line-up was as follows: Darren Holder; Howard Cooke, Mark Jarman, Mark Berriman, Andy Holt, Richard Jordan, Richard Scaldwell, Steve Bell, Nick Smith, Jensen Langford, Danny Feasey
Scorers: Howard, Danny, Nick, Jordi
Subs: Paul Allen for Danny Feasey, Duncan Glen for Jensen Langford and Paul Smithson for Steve Bell

Oct 27th 2002 v Sunninghill Carpenters Arms

5-2

Berks and Bucks
Cup
DC moved into the third round of the Berks and Bucks Cup for the first time* this morning after pushing aside the Carpenters Arms of the Bracknell league. The Steamers took full advantage of the gale force winds and played with the wind in the first half. With this advantage, DC sawed through the Carpenters defense and Jensen should have had two goals to his name after only 20 minutes. It was down to Danny to settle their nerves though as he nailed two more goals to his seasons tally with two calmly taken goals, the latter coming from a great cross from Jensen. The player-manager turned from provider to scorer early on in the second half when he received a through ball and slotted neatly past the keeper. The Carpenters started to take more advantage on the wind and eventually pulled one back after a goalmouth scramble ended with Rory clawing the ball back from over the line. They threatened soon after and nearly scored again when a rasping shot thundered off the cross bar and out to safety. This did not dampen DC spirits though and they regained their 3 goal cushion when Danny rapped up his hat trick. Jensen then made it 5-1 before the Carpenters were allowed to score a late consolation goal. It was the opposition keeper who kept the score down to single numbers. He denied Danny a first half hat trick and also made important saves from Steve B late on.
The starting line-up was as follows: Rory O'Neill; Howard Cooke, Mark Jarman, Andy Holt, Steve Danby, Nick Smith, Richard Scaldwell, Steve Bell, Mark Berriman, Jensen Langford, Danny Feasey

*As far as I can recall (as far back as 1993-94) DC have not been past round 2 of this cup

Scorers: Danny (3), Jensen (2)
Subs: Paul Allen for Steve Danby, Richard Jordan for Jensen Langford and Chris Taylor for Danny Feasey
